Red Moss, Balerno Sampling Trip

On a chilly December morning we set out to Red Moss Peat Bog located just outside Edinburgh to collect 50 cm peat cores. It turns out that frozen bogs are easier to sample! Red Moss has a long history of damage and attempts to restore it over the last few decades require assessment. Eleven cores were collected from two locations on the bog; one set from a site which is undergoing restoration via drain blocking and the other located away from the restoration. These cores are taken at various points to take into account the microtopography of the site. Once back in the lab, the cores will be subjected to a wide range of analysis to assess the impact of restoration.
